Project
Description
A distributor of
specialty stone slabs and tile, Stone Design sought to emphasize the
types and uses of their tile selection. The third of three showrooms,
this showroom was to become the introduction to the company. Stone Design
had five major goals they wished to accomplish. They wanted to showcase
300 different stone tile products and display their uses. But they wished
to present the options gradually, allowing the customers to browse and
travel through the space. Reception desk services were also required
in the showroom. Finally, Stone Design sought to identify the company
as unique in their field.
The space became
a metaphorical quarry. The perimeter display walls were “excavated”,
like that of a quarry wall, to showcase varying tile types and tile
finishes. The floor was divided into differing tile areas by fissures;
the floor heaves up to display tile on nearly vertical surfaces, which
become divisions for the vignettes. These divisions include custom roll-out
storage capabilities. Traditionally tiled spaces are reduced down to
bare minimums, i.e. a toilet, a kitchen sink, to suggest a bathroom
or a kitchen. The path through the space wanders in and out of vignettes
allowing visitors to experience the array of stone, culminating at a
risen slab, from which, water, which is also used in the process of
cutting the stone, leaks and flows into a basin below.
